Want to feel confident for your group performance? These easy rehearsal techniques will help your routine stick between classes.
Your weekly class is where you learn the choreography, but confidence on stage comes from having the routine firm in your mind and settled into your muscle memory. Our tutors often make a class video available, which is a fantastic tool, but spending a little time revisiting the routine during the week can make a huge difference when it comes time to perform. The good news is that revising between classes does not need to be long or intense. A few small habits can help the choreography feel clearer, more familiar, and easier to recall.
Write It Down
Start by writing the routine down after class.
While it is still fresh in your mind, write the order of the steps in words that make sense to you. Give each move a name if that helps. When you step through the routine later, you can say those names out loud and connect them to the movement, which helps your brain keep track of what comes next.
Film Yourself While It’s Fresh
When you get home, film yourself straight away.
Capture the routine from the front and the back while it is still clear in your mind. This gives you something to refer back to later in the week and helps you notice details once you are dancing on your own.
Make It Social
Reach out to your classmates and see if anyone would like to catch up in between classes to revise together. A quick practice at the gym, in a unit common area, or even at the park can be a fun way to run the routine and help each other remember the details.
Mark the Routine
Another helpful technique is marking the routine.
Marking means running the choreography at about 30 to 50 percent intensity. Instead of full energy, you lightly indicate the shapes, pathways, and timing of the movements. This allows you to focus on the details and the sequence of what comes next without tiring yourself out. It can be helpful to do this without music at first, stepping through the choreography in small chunks. Once the order feels clear, try it again with the music and see how it all fits together.
Use the Class Video
If your class has a video available, there are a few ways to make the most of it:
• Mirror the video and dance along
• Pause after each phrase and repeat it before moving on
• Compare your version to the original to catch spacing, timing, or arm details
A little rehearsal between classes goes a long way! It helps the routine feel secure in your body, builds confidence, and means that when it is time to step on stage, you can focus on enjoying the performance and sharing it with your audience.
Happy rehearsals!
